Serve this Easy 4 Ingredient Tartar Sauce Recipe the next time your prepare a plate of crispy fish and chips. This recipe also goes great with any fried seafood. Use this recipe to prepare a delicious condiment using ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen!
Ingredients you will need
- 1 cup of mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup of sweet relish
- 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon of dill
Mayonnaise
This creamy ingredient is the sauce’s foundation. Make sure you use mayo, and not salad dressing. The brand I prefer is Duke’s, it’s a great mayonaisse that’s been produced for over 100 years in nearby South Carolina. If you don’t have Duke’s, any mayo will work.
Sweet relish
This adds a dash of personality, a crunchy texture, and a sweet, tangy punch to our sauce. As a substitute, you can also use dill pickle relish plus a pinch of sugar.
Lemon juice
Fresh lemon juice works best. You will need the juice from a half of a lemon. Its citrusy freshness cuts through the creaminess, balancing the flavors.
Dill
Dry or fresh dill works. Will you don’t need much of this ingredient, it brings a fresh, herby undertone to the sauce.
Kosher salt (optional)
While it is not absolutely necessary, I like to add a pinch of kosher salt to taste. The salt ties everything together, enhancing the flavors.
Directions
To make your tartar sauce, simply combine all these ingredients in a bowl and stir using a rubber spatula until they are well mixed. I like to chill it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to infuse.

How do you know if tartar sauce is bad?
Fresh tartar sauce is usually a pale creamy color, similar to mayonnaise. If it turns darker, or you see any green, blue, or black spots, those are sure signs of mold.
It normally has a tangy, yet pleasant aroma. If it starts to smell sour, that’s another sign your tartar sauce has gone bad.
Finally, if it tastes sour or off, it’s time to discard.
